Group for parents of gender non-conforming child

Social Action Research Project : Parenting a “gender creative” child in today’s society

Are you a parent of or caring for a child who is gender “non‐conforming” or gender “creative”? Does your boy wish he were a princess or constantly pretend he has long hair? Does your girl refuse to wear dresses and feel like a boy? Is your child cross‐dressing in private or public? Does your child feel that they are neither a boy or a girl? If you answer yes to one of these questions, we would love to hear from you.

We are currently seeking to develop a social action research group with parents of gender creative /gender non‐conforming children. This participatory social action research will take the form of group work activities over a period of 15 weeks. The group has two distinct aims: The first aim is to provide parents of gender creative / gender nonconforming children with a safe space to discuss their experience, identify challenges at personal, social and political levels, and frame solutions for action according to their own identified aimed outcome. The second aim, from a research perspective, is to gain an understanding of the issues, challenges and opportunities parents of gender creative / gender non‐conforming children’ experience while negotiating the social and community environments in which their children grow.

You can participate in as many or as few group sessions as you want.

Childcare: for those who have a child that need care during the meetings, a child care facility will be available within the premises at no cost. You can bring your child along, whether they are gender creative / gender non‐conforming or not. Should you be interested in participating in the Social Action Research Group, or if you require more information, please contact:

Dr. Annie Pullen Sansfacon : a.pullen.sansfacon@umontreal.ca

Or, simply drop by at Famijeunes (3904, rue Notre‐Dame Ouest, Montréal, Québec, H4C 1R1) Monday 16 th January 2012, at 6pm for our first meeting. The following meetings will then be held Mondays, every other week between 6pm and 8pm.

What is a board of director?

A Board of Directors (BOD) is a group of volunteers elected by the members of an organization during the AGM in order to manage the organization’s activities. For example, they act as the employer of the staff, and oversee the organization’s finances. At P10, there are 11 directors. These people are NOT paid. Being on the BOD is a good way to learn how an organization functions, and to learn how to organize events.

GENERATION Q

Young and queer. The cultural universe of growing up LGBT is in constant flux and ever expanding – pushing the boundaries and definitions of both “youth” and “queer” to carve out self-identified spaces and realities. The international roster of productions featured in Generation Q offer vibrant reflections of this. At times light-hearted and humorous and at others darkly disturbing, the features and shorts included this year offer a wide spectrum of perspectives and experiences on what it means to be young and queer in the 21st century.

ASTTeQ looking for volunteers

Communication Assistant needed for hard of hearing participant
ASTT(e)Q (Trans Health Action of Québec) hosts a weekly Monday night discussion group from 7-9pm. One of our participants is hard of hearing. A majority of the group content is in French, and this participant is anglophone. We are looking for a volunteer who is fluent in French and English to volunteer as a communication assistant for this participant. The volunteer is needed on a weekly basis (or whenever available) during group hours, to type (computer provided) all conversation into English, so the participant can read along, and thus participate in the group.

We are ideally looking for an assistant who is trans, as this is generally a closed group, but may consider cis (non-trans) volunteers as needed. If you are interested, please contact us at astteq@yahoo.ca or 514-847-0067 x207.

Cooks needed for weekly drop-in
ASTT(e)Q (Trans Health Action of Québec) hosts a weekly Monday night discussion group from 7-9pm. We would like to offer freshly prepared food to our participants. We have a small ($20/week) budget to pay for groceries, and a kitchen where food can be prepared. We would like to have volunteers prepare food prior to our group (i.e. from 5-7pm every Monday, aside from on our community supper night).

If you are interested, please contact us at astteq@yahoo.ca or 514-847-0067 x207.

Distribution of handbook for health care and social service workers working with trans people
We recently published a guide called Taking Charge, intended for health care and social service providers working with trans people. We need volunteers to help distribute it throughout Montreal and across the province. If you are interested, contact us at 514-847-0067 x216 or by email at jackson.astteq@gmail.com.
